TESOL Joins Coalition for the American Dream, Submits Comments to U.S. Department of Homeland Security in Support of DACA Policy

by Stephanie Johnson |

On November 29, 2021, TESOL International Association joined the Coalition for the American Dream in submitting comments to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in response to a proposed rule aimed at preserving and fortifying the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. In July, a federal district judge ruled the program unlawful, halting new applications. If enacted, the proposed rule will reinstate the DACA program without substantive changes while providing applicants the ability to apply for DACA alone, for $85, or to apply for DACA and a work permit for $495.

TESOL applauds the Department of Homeland Security for taking the necessary steps to preserve the DACA program. However, DACA protections are temporary and require applicants live in two-year increments: TESOL is committed to advocating that Congress pass legislation that will provide pathways to permanent citizenship for Dreamers.
