TESOL Supports U.S. Department of Justice’s Memo Regarding Services for Multilingual Learners of English

by Jeff Hutcheson, Director Advocacy & Public Policy |

In a memo issued Monday 21st November 2022, the U.S. Department of Justice affirmed the federal government’s commitment to effectively engage multilingual learners of English (MLE) by strengthening access to and participation in government services. The memo highlights Executive Order 13166, Improving Access to Services for Persons with Limited English Proficiency (16 August 2000) and calls for federal agencies to review and update policies and plans for inclusivity, equity, and access for MLEs, including adapting digital communications.

TESOL International Association, along with partner associations, will continue to engage federal agencies in collaborative, collegial, and productive discussions, in support of the memo and to positively impact MLEs and their families.
